Chapter Ten

He was a damned fool, Zach decided the next morning when he found out that his unexpected bride had flown in the night. He had sat around for most of the morning like an idiot, and she had left so stealthily he hadn’t heard a thing. She would have had her escape plan worked out when she came here, and it would be nigh on impossible to follow the devious woman’s trail by now.

So that was that, then. She didn’t want to marry him and he didn’t want to marry her—stalemate. Of course he didn’t want to wed a woman who was still in love with her late husband, the dead hero of the greatest sea battle in decades, if not centuries. Martha must have married this Lington fellow out of the schoolroom if the fellow died five years ago. By his reckoning, Mrs Martha Lington must be five and twenty now if she was six when Tolbourne threw her out of this house nineteen years ago. Apparently she had left Zach with a few of his wits since he retained those bare facts after their argument last night.

Not very many, he decided, as his failure to convince her to marry him ground into his pride and into something far deeper he didn’t want to think about. He did think of his mother, still so in love with his father all these years after his death, and, if he wasn’t so angry with his runaway lover, he might despair. An alive, stay-at-home-and-do-his-duty viscount wasn’t much competition for her sainted hero husband, was he? He wasn’t going to think about her again, though, was he? He was going to accept her desertion as final and get on with his life without her. He was going to be deliriously happy not to have ended up married to either Tolbourne sister.

Yet here he was still thinking of her even though he knew he was well rid of her. He paced the room while his valet tried to pack with him cluttering up the room being furious with a woman who wasn’t even here for him to be furious with. If he wasn’t careful he wouldn’t have a manservant or a groom left to put up with his grim moods and foul temper.

So neither Tolbourne sister wanted to marry him? So what? There were plenty more fish in the sea. Except this hollow feeling inside said he didn’t want any of them; he only wanted the one he had made love to last night. He struggled with the lowering feeling that she might have been remembering her darling Tom while they made hot, sweet love together. He could have sworn she had been thinking only of him, that she had been with him every step of the way as his glorious, passionate, unforgettable lover.

Not unforgettable. Please let her not be that. Please let her be just the most stubborn, contrary, elusive female I have ever encountered and probably will never see again.

It finally
